Investigation of insects in Estonia has a quite long history. Data on the distribution of insects are stored in entomological collections, publications, unpublished research reports and observation notes. To summarise scattered data, compilation of various checklists and creationof distribution maps are widely used. The principles and methods of compiling distribution maps, based on the international UTM grid, are discussed. The first issues of the distribution maps of Estonian insects deal with Cerambycide (97 species) and Scolytidae (68 species). The history and the results of the investigation of Cerambycidae andScolytidae in Estonia are discussed, and the rarest species are listed.
